Laser Tattoo Removal – How Does it Work?

At Botanique Skin & Spa we use Q switched Nd YAG laser which has been proven to be the most efficient, safest and effective way to remove tattoos. The laser selectively targets the tattoo ink, penetrating through the skin and shattering it into smaller particles which can then be removed via the body’s lymphatic system over the next 6 weeks. This results in a gradual fading which will occur over several weeks.

The clinic is run by government accredited trained staff, and is approved by Queensland Radiation. Anyone performing tattoo removal in Queensland with a class 4 laser is required to have an open licence and to possess a premises permit. If you are in the process of shopping around for which clinic to attend, make sure you ask for this information.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments required will vary from person to person as this is highly dependent on the age and location of the tattoo, the colour and the type of ink used. A new tattoo will usually take longer to remove than an old tattoo. A professional tattooist is more likely to have embedded the ink in the dermis of your skin (deeper) and more likely to have used more ink.

A series of treatments are required for full tattoo removal, although a fewer number can be done to fade back the ink to allow a cover up tattoo to be applied to the area if desired. Tattoo removal can take anywhere between 2-20 treatments, however this is dependent upon your particular tattoo and skin type. The average number of treatments is 5-10.

Fair skinned people tend to experience better results as the laser targets pigment. On dark skin or heavily tanned skin, we tend to set the laser at a lower energy level in order to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation, which typically means more sessions will be required.

Your lymphatic system removes the broken up ink from your tattoo, for your body to remove ink faster and promote healing you need to be in good health. If you are pregnant or suffering from a major illness we will in all likelihood not be able to treat you.

Black and dark blue inks are usually the easiest colours to remove with the Q Switch Nd Yag however other colours such as green and yellow may also respond well. Again this is dependent upon a number of factors.

What Can I Expect?

In terms of pain, some say the sensation is similar to having the tattoo in the first place, whereas others think it is more or less painful. After the consultation and test patch if you think you may pain relief, we strongly recommend obtaining a product such as Emla from the pharmacy or request a prescription from your GP for another numbing agent. We ask that you apply this cream at least one hour prior to your treatment.

What are the Risks?

As with any procedure involving the skin, there are risks and contraindications. If you do not look after your tattoo by following after care procedures, the risk of infection increases.

After the tattoo has been lasered it will frost up, and there will be slight swelling and reddening of the area. The area may be painful for the first 1-5 days so care needs to be taken to keep your tattoo clean and covered. The tattoo may blister, this is more likely to happen in tattoos with colour (especially red) so be sure to leave the blisters alone and not break them prematurely. The treatment will result in scabbing. DO NOT PICK AT THE SCABS.

In rare cases people can have a major reaction to the procedure such as an allergic reaction to the ink particles. This is very rare however any case of a person with a raised temperature, feeling unwell, signs of a major infection should see a doctor immediately. The most common reaction is localised swelling, tenderness and reddening of the area which will subside within the first week.
